What is USDT (Tether) and why Ethiopians use it

A plain-language intro to USDT (Tether) — a stablecoin worth about one US dollar — and why Ethiopians use it to save, pay abroad, and protect their value.

If you’ve heard people talk about “USDT” or “Tether” but weren’t sure what it actually is, this post is for you. In plain terms: USDT is a digital currency designed to always be worth about one US dollar. Here’s what that means, and why it’s become so useful for so many Ethiopians.

What is a stablecoin?

Most cryptocurrencies swing wildly in price. USDT is different — it’s a stablecoin, meaning it’s designed to hold a steady value, pegged to roughly 1 US dollar. One USDT today is meant to be worth about the same tomorrow.

That stability is the whole point. USDT gives you the convenience of crypto — fast, digital, easy to send from your phone — without the rollercoaster price of other coins.

Why Ethiopians use it

A few reasons make USDT especially useful here:

  • Protecting your savings. As the Birr depreciates over time, holding some of what you’ve set aside in something pegged to the dollar helps protect its value.
  • Paying abroad. Importers and merchants sourcing goods from Dubai, China or Turkey, and students paying for online courses or services, need dollars — USDT is a practical way to hold and move that value.
  • Earning and receiving from overseas. Freelancers on Upwork or Fiverr, remote workers, and families receiving help from the diaspora can hold value in dollar terms, then convert to Birr whenever they need it.
  • Fast, mobile-first transfers. USDT moves digitally in seconds to a couple of minutes — well suited to how most people here already bank from a phone.

USDT is designed to track the dollar, but no asset is risk-free. Only hold what makes sense for you, and keep your account secure with 2FA / TOTP.

How USDT works on SwapNile

SwapNile is a peer-to-peer marketplace where Ethiopians buy and sell USDT for Birr, settled through everyday rails like CBE and Telebirr. Every trade is protected by custodial escrow: the seller’s USDT is locked before any Birr changes hands, and it only releases once payment is confirmed. You can buy USDT with Birr, sell USDT for Birr, hold it in your balance, or withdraw it to your own wallet.

Why Tron (TRC-20)?

On SwapNile, USDT lives on the Tron network as USDT-TRC20. Tron is popular for USDT because transfers are fast and the network fee is small. When you withdraw, you’ll send to a TRC-20 address.

This matters: only ever send and receive USDT on the Tron (TRC-20) network. Sending USDT on a different network can lose the funds permanently. We cover this in detail in USDT on Tron: deposits and withdrawals explained.
