How to sell USDT for Birr and get paid to your CBE or Telebirr
Sell USDT for Birr on SwapNile and get paid straight to CBE or Telebirr — escrow locks your USDT, the buyer pays, and you confirm before anything releases.
If you’re a freelancer cashing out your Upwork or Fiverr earnings, or you’ve received USDT from family abroad and need Birr in your account for everyday spending, selling on SwapNile is simple and safe. Your USDT goes into escrow, the buyer sends you Birr by bank transfer or Telebirr, and you confirm the money has arrived before the USDT is released. You stay in control the whole way. Here’s how it works.
1. Post or accept a buy order
You have two ways to sell:
- Post your own offer — set your price, the amount of USDT you want to sell, and the payment rails you accept (CBE, Telebirr, Awash, Dashen/Amole, or Bank of Abyssinia). Buyers come to you.
- Accept a buy order — browse the order book for people who want to buy, and take one that matches your price and the account you want to be paid into.
Either way, you decide the terms before anything starts. Pick the rail your Birr lands in fastest — many sellers prefer Telebirr or CBE for quick, easy-to-check transfers.
2. Your USDT goes into escrow
When a trade begins, your USDT is locked in custodial escrow held by SwapNile. It leaves your spendable balance but does not go to the buyer yet. This reassures the buyer enough to send their Birr — and it protects you, because the buyer can’t get the USDT until you confirm payment.
3. Wait for the buyer’s Birr
The buyer transfers the agreed Birr to your account on the rail you chose, then marks the trade as paid and uploads a receipt where needed.
Don’t act on the receipt alone. A screenshot is not money, and a forwarded “payment successful” SMS can be faked.
Always open your own CBE or Telebirr app and confirm the Birr has actually landed before you release. “Payment sent” and “payment received in your account” are not the same thing.
4. Confirm receipt and release
Once you’ve verified the full amount has arrived, confirm receipt on the trade screen. The escrow then releases your USDT to the buyer automatically.
If the payment never shows up, or the amount is short, don’t confirm. Open a dispute instead — the USDT stays locked in escrow until SwapNile resolves it, so your funds are never at risk while a disagreement is sorted out. Keep in mind that on weekends and Ethiopian holidays some inter-bank transfers can be slower to settle, so give a pending transfer a little time before assuming the worst.
5. You’ve been paid
The Birr is already in your CBE or Telebirr account, and the USDT has moved to the buyer. The trade is complete — no extra step, no waiting for a branch to open. Your earnings or your remittance are now spendable Birr, wherever you received the transfer.
