Reading the SwapNile order book: a guide for Ethiopian traders

Read SwapNile's buy and sell offers like a local trader — compare Birr price, amount and limits, and pick an offer by payment method, whether you use Telebirr or your bank.

The order book is where every SwapNile trade begins. At first it can look like a wall of numbers, but once you know what each column means, picking a good offer takes seconds — whether you are an importer buying USDT to pay a supplier in Dubai or just protecting some savings as the Birr loses ground.

This guide walks you through it in plain language so you can place your first order with confidence.

Buy side vs sell side

The order book has two tabs: Buy and Sell.

  • On the Buy tab you see offers from people selling USDT. You pay Birr, you receive USDT.
  • On the Sell tab you see offers from people buying USDT. You hand over USDT, you receive Birr.

Pick the tab that matches what you want to do. An importer turning Birr into USDT to settle an invoice is buying. A freelancer who just got paid in USDT and needs Birr for everyday costs is selling.

The columns

Each row in the book is one offer. The columns tell you everything you need:

  • Price — how many Birr you pay (or get) for one USDT. Lower is better when you buy; higher is better when you sell.
  • Amount / available — how much USDT the maker has left in this offer. You cannot trade more than this.
  • Limits — the minimum and maximum Birr the maker will accept in a single trade. Your order has to fall inside this range.
  • Payment methods — which Birr rails the maker accepts: Telebirr, CBE, Awash, Dashen (Amole), or Bank of Abyssinia.

Before you commit, check the limits and payment methods first. A great price is no use if the offer needs more Birr than you want to spend, or wants a bank you do not have.

Picking an offer by payment method

This is the part that matters most in Ethiopia. Choose offers you can actually pay quickly:

  • Telebirr is on your phone and works any time, even on a weekend or a holiday. If you want to pay in minutes, filter for makers who accept it.
  • Bank transfers — CBE Birr, Awash, Dashen, Bank of Abyssinia — are great too, but remember bank apps can be slower outside working hours and during holiday periods, so the seller may see your payment land a little later.

Sort by price, look at the top rows, then read across. A good first offer has a fair price, limits that fit your budget, and a payment method you already use day to day.

Starting the trade

Tap the offer, enter how much you want to trade in Birr or USDT, and confirm. The trade then moves into custodial escrow: the seller’s USDT is locked before any Birr changes hands, so neither side can walk away with both. You pay by Telebirr or bank transfer, mark the trade paid, and the seller confirms before the USDT is released to you.

If you want the full picture of how that protection works, read how P2P escrow protects your trade.

A few habits that help

  • Start small on your first trade so you can learn the flow without pressure.
  • Keep your Telebirr or bank app open so you can pay quickly once the trade starts.
  • Always confirm the exact Birr amount before you send anything.

That is the whole order book. Buy or sell side, check price, amount, limits and payment method, then start the trade.
