How to buy USDT with Ethiopian Birr: a step-by-step guide

Buy USDT with Birr on SwapNile — pay by Telebirr or CBE, pay your overseas supplier or protect your savings, and receive USDT safely through escrow.

Whether you’re a merchant in Addis sourcing goods from Dubai or Guangzhou, a freelancer who needs dollars to pay for a tool or a subscription, or someone who simply wants to hold part of their savings in something steadier than Birr, buying USDT is the first step. On SwapNile it’s straightforward: you pick a seller’s offer, pay in Birr from your CBE or Telebirr account, and the USDT is released to you from escrow once your payment is confirmed. Here’s the whole process.

1. Open the order book and find a sell offer

The order book lists people selling USDT for Birr. Each offer shows the price per USDT, the amount available, and which payment rails the seller accepts — CBE, Telebirr, Awash, Dashen (Amole), or Bank of Abyssinia.

Compare a few offers and pick one with a fair price and a payment method you actually have on your phone. You don’t have to take the whole amount — most offers let you buy part of what’s on sale, so you can start small while you find your feet.

2. Start the trade

Enter how much you want to buy and start the trade. The moment you do, the seller’s USDT is locked in custodial escrow held by SwapNile. It’s no longer the seller’s to spend, and it isn’t yours yet either — it sits safely locked until the trade completes.

This is what makes the deal safe: the crypto is already out of the seller’s hands before you send a single Birr.

3. Pay the Birr

The trade screen shows the seller’s payment details and the exact amount to send. Open your CBE Birr app, your Telebirr, or whichever rail you agreed, and transfer that amount. Telebirr and in-app bank transfers usually clear in seconds, which keeps the trade moving — handy when you’re buying to pay a supplier on a deadline.

Send the exact amount to the exact account shown, and pay only within SwapNile so the trade stays protected.

Never send Birr to an account someone shares in a side chat — a Telegram message, a forwarded number, “use this account instead.” If it isn’t the payment detail on the SwapNile trade screen, it isn’t part of your protected trade.

4. Mark the trade as paid

Once your transfer is done, mark the trade as paid. Where needed, upload your payment receipt — the CBE or Telebirr confirmation SMS or screenshot — so the seller can verify it quickly. This tells the seller the Birr is on its way.

5. Receive your USDT

The seller checks their own account. As soon as your Birr lands, they confirm receipt and the escrow releases the USDT to your SwapNile balance — usually within seconds to a couple of minutes. If anything goes wrong, you can open a dispute and the funds stay locked until it’s resolved.

That’s it. The USDT is now yours, settled on the Tron network (TRC-20), ready to hold as savings or withdraw to pay an overseas supplier, a freelance tool, or a service you can’t buy in Birr.
