5 ways to avoid scams when trading crypto P2P in Ethiopia

Five rules to trade USDT for Birr safely in Ethiopia — beat fake Telebirr SMS, off-platform Telegram brokers and reversed transfers by trusting escrow.

Peer-to-peer trading is safe when you follow a few simple rules — and risky the moment you break them. Most P2P scams aimed at Ethiopian traders work the same way: they try to get you to release USDT or send Birr outside the protections that keep you safe. Here are five rules that defeat almost all of them.

1. Never release USDT before the Birr actually lands

This is the big one. If you’re selling, open your own CBE or Telebirr app and confirm the full amount has truly arrived in your account before you release. A “payment sent” message, a fake Telebirr or bank confirmation SMS, or a screenshot forwarded by the buyer is not proof of payment — those are trivial to fake, and forged confirmation SMS are one of the most common tricks here.

The single most common scam is a convincing screenshot or SMS of a transfer that never happened. Confirm in your own bank or Telebirr app, every time, with no exceptions.

2. Keep every trade on the platform

Scammers love to pull you into a side chat — Telegram, WhatsApp, a phone call — and arrange a “faster” or “cheaper” deal as a friendly “broker.” Don’t. The moment you trade off-platform, you lose escrow, you lose dispute support, and you lose any record of what was agreed. Do all communication and payment inside your SwapNile trade.

3. Trust the escrow — that’s what it’s for

On SwapNile, the seller’s USDT is locked in custodial escrow before any Birr moves, and it only releases when payment is confirmed. You don’t have to trust a stranger — you trust the escrow. If anyone asks you to send first “to build trust,” or to skip the escrow because they’re a “trusted trader,” that’s a red flag, not a courtesy.

If you’re not sure how it works, read How P2P escrow protects your trade before your next deal.

4. Verify the amounts and the account, exactly

Check three things on every trade:

  • The amount of USDT matches what you agreed.
  • The amount of Birr matches the price.
  • You’re paying to (or receiving at) the exact account shown on the trade screen — not one someone messaged you separately.

“Send to this other CBE account instead” and off-by-a-little requests are how money quietly goes missing. Be wary too of buyers who pay and then claim a “reversal” — keep everything on-platform so the record speaks for itself.

5. Be suspicious of deals that are too good

A rate far better than everyone else’s, urgent pressure to act “right now before the price moves,” or a friendly offer to handle it “directly off the app to save fees” — these are bait. A fair trade through escrow is worth more than a great-looking trade that leaves you exposed. Protect your account too: turn on 2FA / TOTP so no one but you can sign in.

Stick to these five rules and the vast majority of P2P scams simply can’t touch you. Trade safely: create an account or read more guides on the blog.
